Ultrasound

An ultrasound is often referred if you’re having pain, swelling or other symptoms that require an internal view. Non-invasive, ultrasound is particularly useful for detecting body tissue and blood flow and can be used for a variety of scans, including abdominal, pelvic and musculoskeletal scans, such as those for the shoulder, hip or knee. Ultrasound is a safe, painless and radiation free examination that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the body. A special gel is used on your skin to help transmit the images.

These ultrasound images are captured in real time so they appear as moving images on a monitor however, both still images and video images can be produced. Your ultrasound examination will be performed by one of our highly trained sonographers. They have many years of experience in this field and use the most up-to-date ultrasound equipment available.

Ultrasound does not use radiation so it is also the preferred method for monitoring during pregnancy. Common procedures include the Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan and a Morphology Scan. The NT Scan is a screen test to establish pregnancies at high risk of having chromosomal conditions while a morphology scan is used to assess your baby’s well-being and development.
During your pregnancy two of the most common scans you will be referred for, are the Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan and a Morphology Scan. An NT scan is a screening test to establish if your pregnancy has a high risk of Down’s Syndrome or other chromosomal conditions. It involves a blood test and an ultrasound. Ideally, you arrange for your blood test to be carried out first, from about 9 weeks. You can then book your NT ultrasound scan between 12 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days. The morphology scan is used to assess the well-being of your baby and to check your dates. This scan is performed during your pregnancy between 18 to 22 weeks. Our highly experience sonographers are fully ASAR accredited and perform these ultrasounds.

Ultrasound at Sunshine Coast Radiology
Ultrasound examinations may require special preparation, such as fasting or drinking water. It is very important you follow your preparation as it may affect image quality. When you book your appointment our receptionist will provide you with the necessary instructions and is happy to answer any queries that you may have. Please bring to the clinic any prior scans (eg. X-rays, Ultrasounds, MRI, CT) and reports as these will assist the Radiologist in assessing your condition.
At your appointment you may be asked to change into a gown, depending on the part of the body being examined. One of our sonographers who is accredited with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) captures and prints the requested images using a probe (also known as a transducer) which emits the ultrasound waves. A water-based gel will be spread on your skin to assist in the transmission of sound waves. You may be required to hold your breath or move into different positions so that the best images can be obtained. The sonographer will provide you with direction throughout the scan. On occasion, one of our Radiologists may need to speak with you and come in and scan as well. There is no need for concern, as the Radiologist must be satisfied that the images captured will answer the question your referring GP or healthcare provider has asked.
Procedures can take up to 1 hour to conduct although the average time is 20-30 minutes.
A Radiologist (medical doctor specialising in the interpretation of medical images for the purposes of providing a diagnosis) will review your images and provide a formal written report to your GP or Specialist. If medically urgent, or you have an appointment immediately after the scan to be seen by your GP or health care provider, Sunshine Coast Radiology Clinic will have your results ready on the day. Otherwise, the report will be received by your GP or health care provider within the next 24 hours. You will receive your images at the end of your examination. Please remember to make a follow up appointment with your referring doctor or health care provider to discuss your results.
Any referral for a scan is valid at Sunshine Coast Radiology Clinic, even if it has been written on a referral form from another radiology provider.

Nuchal Translucency is the fluid found at the back of your baby’s head and neck, just beneath the skin. The thickness of this fluid can be precisely measured. Data gathered from the scan measurement, blood test results and personal information are used to calculate either a low risk or high risk outcome.
It is a screening ultrasound. It is a non-invasive way of providing information about your baby’s risk of certain chromosonal abnormalities (trisomy 13, 18 and 21).
You should arrange your scan between 12 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days gestation.
There are established and strict criteria for the accurate measurement of the nuchal translucency. Our fully trained and ASAR accredited sonographers perform this procedure.
After your doctor refers you for a morphology scan, you can book your scan when your baby’s gestational age is 18-22 weeks (preferably 19 weeks or over).
Please fill your bladder based on the information our reception staff will provide at the time of booking. Also please bring in any prior scans you may have for this pregnancy.
