Bone Densitometry

A bone mineral density scan (BMD), also known as a DEXA scan, uses advanced technology to determine your bone health. The scan is usually done on the lower back and one of the hips although sometimes the forearm is included in the examination. These types of bone scans aid in the detection of osteoporosis, which is a condition where bones become fragile and brittle. This can lead to a higher risk of fractures or breaks. The risk of osteoporosis increases with age. In fact, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men over the age of 60 are at risk of an osteoporotic fracture (www.osteoporosis. org.au). However, osteoporosis can be both preventable and treatable, particularly when bone loss is detected at the earliest possible stage.

You will need to book in for Bone Mineral Density examination with a referral from your doctor. Our Hologic system can compare previous bone density results from different equipment, so please bring any previous scans to your appointment. We recommend you do not have a bone densitometry scan within 7 days of having another medical Imaging examination that requires an injection of contrast.
A BMD examination is painless, performed in a comfortable setting with no injections and a very low radiation dose. You will be asked to change into an examination gown to prevent metal and other artefacts interfering with the image.
The entire procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete, although real scanning time is only 2-3 minutes.
Your results will be sent to your referring doctor.
